Canadiana: Nickelback

Just to be clear, i'm not just obsessed with old-school Canadian rock bands. I like new ones too. Here's a Canadian band that may be passingly familiar to those of you beyond the great white north. And they're a band from Hanna, Alberta to boot -- a town north and east of Calgary.

You're going to get Ivy's attention with this one, but better add 'Burn it to the Ground'. I know she will be asking for it.

Sure, but how much can a reasonalbe person listen to Nickelback on the radio?

This is a great example of why the CRTC needs to die an explosive death....soon.

The overplaying of band like nickelback to reach Caadian content regs, keeps other bands from making their mark.

I can NEVER get enough of this band. LOVE them. Have for years and years now. Great writer, great stuff.

And, fantastic jogging song, that Burn It to the Ground. I don't drink, at all, but that song kicks butt when it comes to jogging and shoveling mounds and mounds of snow.

As for radio, I don't listen to that much at all anymore anymore.

Do you like Theory as well? I do. Just got done listening to them during my morning Wiggy Walk.

And now .. headed to the writing desk for two hours. Have a great day, Paladin.

PS: I enjoyed watching the Spider-Man one. Great song again. And I see Tyler there as well.

Good stuff. Good stuff.

Some of my favorite Canadian bands are: Huevos Rancheros, Chixdiggit, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, Sloan and Flashing Lights.

I thought "Nickelback" was Canadian for "change the station!"

*Not* a fan of Nickelback. At all.

But I have intrigued by your Canadiana series. I grew up just over the border in Detroit and all the best radio stations came from Windsor. So I had a lot of exposure to late 80's/early-90's Canadian artists.

My list of Canadian faves (past and current):
* Johnny Hollow
* Neko Case (she lives in Vancouver now, I think)
* New Pornographers
* Delerium
* Loreena McKennitt
* Sarah McLachlan

@Ivy ... Someone described both Nickelback and Theory as post-grunge? I was never into grunge (other than the stuff that went mainstream) so i'm not sure what that means!

@Kilted ... Canada's not the only country with MAPLe-like rules, which on balance have allowed local bands in those countries to flourish. I don't think you can blame the CRTC for the laziness of canadian broadcasters, if they are overplaying certain bands.

MAPLe's been in place for 40 years, perhaps we can set the wayback machine, travel back in time to prevent the CRTC from introducing MAPLe, then come back to the future and see if Canada would have been a better place for having prevented it.

My gut tells me no, but when 'im right 51% of the time ... :D

Risus: Puts hands over ears and says, "I can't hear you."

Paladin: I've heard that before, too. I love 'em both. But Nickelback, forget it. Great song writer, Chad is. Great band.

And Bryan Adams. Grew up with him, can't forget that one.

Risus: "La la la la. I still can't hear you."

[Initiate Rant]

It isn't the laziness of the broadcasters, it's that the broadcasters have to sell advertising. How the heck are they going to do that if they aren't playing Nickelback-like bands?

Don't think for a moment, in either radio or TV, that the CRTC is a white knight charging in to "save our cultural distinctiveness" or whatever. That's just rhetoric for maintaining current vested interests. Fuck them and the so-called Friends of Canadian Broadcasting too.

The CRTC must die.
