Several fellow bloggers have recommended Karl Wagner's fiction so, during one of my forays to a used bookstore, I picked up a copy of Bloodstone (along with Han Solo's Revenge, a Star Wars novel published in 1979).

I have just been reading through the Star Wars novels. It is amazing how different they are during the different eras. The ones written during the period of time that the original trilogy was being made have a completely different feel from the ones written during the Heir to the Empire time. And both of those time periods are very different from the current version of the Star Wars universe in print. Even the characters from the original trilogy are presented in a very different light now.
I seem to recall reading the original Han Solo trilogy back in the late 70's/early 80's and enjoying the gritty sci-fi setting. How does that compare to the more recent stuff?
Brian Daley's "Coramonde" books (his first two novels) are not bad -- somewhat gonzo fantasy, with a protagonist from modern Earth. The first book is better.
I'll have to watch for them next time I go shopping, thanks for the tip.
The first set of Star Wars EU books in the '90s, by Timothy Zahn, were reasonably well done. Sadly, pretty much all of the other books that were written for the rest of the decade took his plot and followed it like a formula.
There is some kind of external military threat to the New Repubic that Leia has a hard time convincing the Senate to deal with. Luke investigates a mysterious Jedi/Force related mystery while either Han reconnects with old smuggler buddies or Lando investigates a Big Dumb Space Object. This tended to get done in trilogies. The overall feel, while still Space Opera, drifted closer to the military sci if end of the spectrum instead of the space fantasy feel of the movies. The characters do tend to keep many of their characteristics from the films, but Han becomes less and less roguish and Luke becomes more and more brooding as the era drags on.
The books of the last decade have tended towards much longer, epic series, with a darker, anime inspired term. They have focused more on Han and Leia's kids and have been fairly melodramatic. The original characters are almost unrecognizable, personality wise, from their movie roots.
By the way, the captcha is absolutely horrible.
Bloodstone is fantastic. I actually think it's the best of the three Kane novels, and so perfectly illustrates that which is the essence of Kane's character; he is a power completely unto himself, and will do anything to increase that power. And yet...at the end of it all...there is a glimmer of honor deep inside him that can cause him to falter when he is this close to victory.
I hope you enjoy Bloodstone - I've read it at least three times, and it's great each time.
