Honesty vs Underhanded Tactics: Contrasting Adaptive vs Expedient Personality Traits

In Dark Provinces, character traits are not fixed ability scores.  They are dynamic, behavioral approaches under stress and situational pressure. Every HEXACO dimension manifests through two distinct approaches: Adaptive and Expedient.

Adaptive Traits (marked by downwards-pointing blue triangles) represent constructive, sustainable responses to pressure. They contribute 1 effort to a challenge while building trust, shielding party reputation, or unlocking synergistic bonuses.

Take Transparent Deal (HS+TD) for example.

This adaptive Honesty/Sincerity trait synergizes with Openness to remove barriers to success and allows the player to gain future insight via its optional special effect. It mitigates penalties without introducing social residue, stabilizing the group over the long haul.

Expedient Traits (marked by upwards-pointing orange triangles) represent high-risk, opportunistic, or stress-induced behaviors. While they offer 2 effort to boost marginal failures into successes, that power comes at a cost.

Consider Pocket Sand (HF-PS).

This expedient Honesty/Fairness trait employs underhanded tactics for a sudden victory, yet playing it risks reputation loss, if played in conjunction with Honesty or Agreeableness.  While its optional special effect mitigates penalties, it comes at the cost of another honest player accumulating stress.

The temptation of expedience emerges directly from the constraints of limited resources. Because the game's embedded Prisoner's Dilemma makes continuous cooperation a losing strategy, remaining players are under constant pressure to bring sufficient effort to bear to overcome challenges. That pressure tempts players to use expedience to close the distance, borrowing against the future to survive today, at the risk of long-term deck mutation and group collapse.
