  1. Here's a book suggestion that might be useful for gaming inspiration, while not being fiction: Gangs of New York.

The 19th century gangs of the Bowery and Five Points areas of Manhattan, along with the river pirates and waterfront dives, might make a useful model for a savage game-world underworld.

Their main weapons seem to have been brickbats, knives, and staves, with the occasional gun. One gang, the Plug Uglies, wore low top hats that they stuffed with wool and leather before a fight, to act as a cheap padded helmet.

In addition to their inter-gang fights, they were politically connected, and used as muscle and vote enforcers by the political powers at Tammany Hall. They were always ready to start a riot for whatever political scheme was afoot.

I've just started reading it. I knew about the 2002 film, but I didn't realize the book it was based on was from the 1920s.

  2. Excellent suggestion! Who is the author?

  3. Herbert Asbury. Shouldn't be hard to find a cheap copy.

  4. Here's one of the people described:

"Hell-Cat Maggie (fl. 1840-1845) was the pseudonym of an American criminal and early member of the Dead Rabbits. She was a well-known personality in Manhattan's Five Points district and a noted female fighter, her teeth reportedly filed into points and wore long claw-like brass fingernails,[1] who fought alongside the Dead Rabbits and other Five Pointers against rival nativist gangs from the Bowery, most especially the Bowery Boys, during the early 1840s."

Asbury also wrote about New Orleans and San Francisco of the same period. Either would be an interesting contrast to New York, due to the different mix of ethnicities and cultures.

  5. You know ... I might not be the best reader in the world, but this looks NOTHING like a sourdough waffle formula.

  6. I've got all the photos, I just need to upload them and the recipe. The rest of my vacation was mostly internet-less, so you'll have to wait a couple more days!

  7. Have you read the Mordant's Need books by Donaldson? http://www.amazon.com/Mirror-Her-Dreams-Mordants-Need/dp/0345346971 They are really good and an interesting take on wizards (imagers)

  8. I have not. Donaldson, eh? I'm headed down to the local secondhand book store this weekend, i'll have a look. I'm still working through the list above (the red titles)

  9. Or the red ones those you have read or those you haven't?

  10. Have not read, and do not yet own a copy of.

  11. Ah! Then I'll note that I just read the first two Oz books. Interesting, especially if your only frame of reference is the movie from the 30's. I can't say I loved them, but there is certainly a lot of ideas to loot for a game.

However, I'll vote that, of the remaining red ones, the Wagner books are most in need of immediate reading.

  12. Thanks for letting me know about Wagner. I'm probably finding it difficult to locate them, which is why they would be on the list, in red.

  13. I can't recommend Tim Powers' The Anubis Gates enough- the book has it all, loathsome villains, a saucy heroine, and a protagonist who starts off completely over his head and morphs into a badass through a startling plot twist. The book is so tight, it's like a Jello mold- poke it in one spot, and the whole plot jiggles.

I also love Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun- it's a remarkable book, and greatly rewards readers who stick with it, even though the language is pretty arcane.
