When you play Dark Provinces, you are not just exploring scary ruins in the desert or dealing with interpersonal conflicts in Adam-Ondi-Ahman. You are managing how your character thinks, feels, and acts. That is where Trait Cards come in. These trait cards make up the hand you hold during the game, and they represent how you react to challenges under pressure. Every card gives you different ways to handle tough challenges and deal with the other players in your group.
The 400 Trait cards in the game are split into two main types:
1. Blue Adaptive Cards These cards are all about working together, staying calm, and helping the group survive.
Torchbearer lets you step up to lead the team through dark, scary caves and scout ahead for danger.
Steady Hands helps you stay calm under pressure, like when you need to pick a tricky lock while everyone else is panicking.
Witness the Truth forces everyone to face reality and see hidden threats before it is too late.
Playing these cards keeps your team safe and lowers your overall stress.
2. Orange Expedient Cards These cards are about looking out for yourself and getting big rewards, even if it sometimes hurts your teammates.
Cold Calculation lets you throw away empathy and use cold logic to optimize your own survival and grab extra loot.
Tempt Fate lets you gamble on wild magic to get huge payoffs, but it risks major psychological danger.
Unsettled Score lets you use the team's success to get revenge on someone who wronged you in the past.
Every time you play a card, you have to make a choice. Do you play it safe and help the group with Adaptive traits, or do you take risks with Expedient traits to get richer and stronger? If you play too many selfish cards, your teammates might stop trusting you when things get bad.
How will you handle your hand when the heat of the desert overtakes you?
